Apple has reportedly secured a three-year exclusive supply agreement with Samsung Display for the foldable panels powering the new iPhone Duo. According to a report from leaker Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple is paying approximately $250 for each foldable display unit, a figure that highlights the significant manufacturing premium of the company’s first foldable device.
The $250 component cost represents roughly 12.5% of the device’s $1,999 retail price. For comparison, the standard OLED panels used in the iPhone 18 Pro Max reportedly cost Apple approximately $70 per unit. This nearly four-fold increase in display costs explains the Duo’s position at the top of Apple’s pricing structure, as the company navigates the complex yields and specialized materials required for folding glass.

The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch internal foldable display paired with a 5.4-inch external cover screen. To meet Apple’s requirements for brightness and power efficiency, the panels utilize Samsung’s M16 OLED material set. This specific material configuration is reported to be superior to the M13 panels found in current competing foldables, offering a technical edge that likely contributed to the high per-unit price.
Industry analysts suggest the three-year deal is a departure from Apple’s typical strategy of diversifying its supply chain. While Apple often pit LG Display and BOE against one another to drive down costs, reports indicate that only Samsung Display could currently meet the rigorous technical specifications and volume requirements for the Duo’s primary screen. By locking in a multi-year contract, Apple ensures a stable supply for the first several generations of the product line.
The manufacturing economics of the Duo differ sharply from the rest of the iPhone 18 lineup. While the Duo’s bill of materials is driven by its expensive display, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are currently facing a “RAMageddon” memory crisis. A global shortage has reportedly made memory the most expensive component for the standard Pro models for the first time, whereas the Duo remains defined by its specialized folding hardware.
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, marking the first major product category launch under the leadership of John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on September 1, 2026. The device is scheduled for a retail release on October 23, 2026.
