Since the release of iOS 18, recording audio no longer requires toggling between third-party apps; instead, Apple has integrated live transcription, AI-driven summaries, and native call recording directly into the operating system.
The most significant shift for users is the ability to record audio within Apple Notes. This method is specifically designed for situations where a text record is as important as the audio itself, such as lectures or business meetings. When a recording is started inside a note, the app provides real-time, live transcription of the speech. Users can then use Apple Intelligence to generate a concise summary of that transcript, provided they are using a compatible device like the iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 model.
Native Call Recording
Apple now supports native phone call recording, resolving a long-standing limitation that previously required complex workarounds or paid third-party software. During an active call, users can initiate a recording by tapping a dedicated button in the top-left corner of the screen.
To maintain privacy and meet legal standards, the iPhone automatically plays an audible notification to all participants when recording begins. Once the call ends, the audio file is saved to the Notes app, where the system can generate a full transcript and an AI summary of the conversation.
Advanced Voice Memos and Editing
For standard audio captures that do not require an immediate Note association, the Voice Memos app is a built-in tool. It has been updated to support the same AI-powered summarization features found in Notes. Beyond simple capture, Apple Support notes that users can non-destructively edit their files by using the “Replace” feature, which allows for recording over specific segments of an existing file to correct mistakes.
Device and Language Requirements
While basic recording is available on all modern iPhones, the advanced transcription and summary features are hardware-dependent. These capabilities require the processing power of the A17 Pro chip or later.
Currently, the AI-driven summary and transcription features are optimized for specific regions and languages. Most on-device transcription is handled locally to preserve privacy, meaning a constant internet connection is not strictly required for the basic text generation, though AI summaries may require an initial download of language models.
