Following the Season 4 finale of Ted Lasso, co-creator and star Brendan Hunt has clarified the status of a potential fifth season. Despite the narrative shifts introduced in the finale, titled “Being Alive,” Apple TV+ has not yet officially greenlit a fifth installment.

In an interview on October 8, 2026, Hunt confirmed that a writers’ room for Season 5 has not been opened, countering earlier speculation that pre-production was already underway. While the series continues to be a cornerstone for the streaming platform, the path forward remains dependent on an official order that has not yet materialized.

The Season 4 finale, which aired on October 7, 2026, fundamentally restructured the leadership at AFC Richmond. In a significant “passing of the torch” moment, the focus shifted toward the Lady Greyhounds, the club’s women’s team. The finale established a new coaching hierarchy where Ted Lasso and Coach Beard serve as assistant managers under head coach Alice Chilton.

According to Hunt, this specific coaching arrangement was designed to ensure the show handled the transition into women’s football with authenticity. Hunt explained that the creative team wanted to avoid a scenario where Ted Lasso appeared as a “tourist” in the women’s game, instead positioning him in a supportive role that allows the existing structure of the women’s team to lead the narrative.

The finale also addressed significant departures and personal milestones for the core cast. Roy Kent, portrayed by Brett Goldstein, accepted the head coaching position at Chelsea, a move that provides the production with logistical flexibility regarding Goldstein’s and Juno Temple’s filming schedules. On the personal front, the finale revealed that Roy and Keeley Jones are expecting their first child.

While fans await news on Season 5, a writers' room has not yet been officially greenlit by Apple TV+.

Control of AFC Richmond also saw a definitive resolution following the death of Mae Green. The Season 4 finale recap details how Rebecca Welton regained Mae’s 2% stake in the club, allowing her to retain 51% majority control. Rebecca’s personal arc concluded the season on a high note as she proposed to Matthijs.

While Jason Sudeikis has previously alluded to the possibility of the show following a second three-season arc, Hunt’s recent updates emphasize that these plans are not yet in active development. For now, the “assistant” era for Ted and Beard serves as the current status quo for the franchise, leaving the door open for future stories without the immediate pressure of a production timeline.
