Apple is implementing a new global age-rating policy that will effectively bar minors from accessing dating apps and romantic AI companions on the App Store. Under the updated guidelines, any application identified as containing “Dating and Relationships” content will receive a minimum age rating of 18+, standardizing a requirement that previously varied by region and developer self-reporting.

The mandate extends beyond traditional matchmaking services like Tinder or Bumble. Apple has clarified that the “Dating and Relationships” descriptor now explicitly covers “virtual companions” that engage users in romantic or sexual content. This move addresses the burgeoning market for AI-driven relationship simulators, ensuring these digital interactions are subject to the same age-gating as human-to-human dating platforms.

Implementation Timeline and Developer Requirements

Apple plans to introduce the new content descriptors to the App Store age rating questionnaire starting November 16, 2026. Developers will be required to update their app declarations in App Store Connect to reflect these new categories. While the descriptors will be available shortly, Apple has set a universal deadline of January 12, 2027, for all existing apps to complete their declarations.

Apps that fail to meet this deadline or inaccurately report their content could face removal or blocked updates until they comply with the 18+ floor. This shift represents a transition toward more granular content reporting, forcing developers to be more explicit about the nature of the social and romantic interactions their software facilitates.

Location Sharing and Regional Regulations

In addition to the romantic content mandate, Apple is introducing more stringent requirements for location-sharing features. Developers must now declare if their app shares a user’s real-world location with other people or groups.

While the 18+ dating mandate is global, Apple is also adjusting to regional legal landscapes, particularly in Brazil. In that market, local regulations mandate a minimum “A16” rating for any app featuring location-sharing capabilities. For apps that include both location sharing and dating features, the stricter “A18” rating required for dating content will take precedence.

These changes follow a broader trend of App Store updates aimed at safety and age-appropriate content. By grouping AI romantic companions with traditional dating services, Apple is signaling that the psychological and social nature of the content, rather than whether the “partner” is human or code, is the determining factor for age-based access.
