Managing the interface of Android Auto often feels like a balancing act between safety and convenience. While the platform automatically populates the car display with compatible apps, users frequently encounter “vanishing” apps or a cluttered grid of icons they never use. Controlling which apps appear on your dashboard requires diving into the launcher settings on your smartphone, where you can toggle visibility, reorder shortcuts, or troubleshoot why a specific service has disappeared.
For most users, the path to these settings depends on the device manufacturer. On a Google Pixel or other devices running near-stock software, navigate to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. Samsung users will find the menu under Settings > Connected devices > Android Auto. From there, selecting “Customize launcher” provides a checklist of every compatible app installed on the phone.
Why Apps Disappear from the Car Screen
One of the most common frustrations for Android Auto users is an app suddenly missing from the car’s display despite still being installed on the phone. This is often not a glitch, but a result of aggressive battery optimization or new security features. On Samsung devices, the “Deep Sleep” feature may automatically disable apps that haven’t been opened recently. When an app enters this state, it is effectively hidden from the car’s launcher until it is manually launched on the phone again.
Recent updates to the Android operating system have introduced further layers of complexity. Android 15’s “Private Space” feature allows users to move sensitive apps into a secure vault. If an app is moved to this space or the space is currently locked, the app will vanish from the vehicle’s interface entirely.
How to Hide and Reorder Apps
Hiding an app from the Android Auto launcher does not uninstall it from your phone. It simply removes the icon from the vehicle’s grid to reduce distraction. Within the “Customize launcher” menu, unchecking the box next to an app’s name moves it to the “Hidden apps” section at the bottom of the list. These can be restored at any time by re-checking the box.
Users can also change the order in which apps appear. By default, the system often uses an alphabetical arrangement, but selecting “Launcher sorting” allows for a custom order. Placing high-use apps like Google Maps, Spotify, or WhatsApp at the top of the list ensures they are easily accessible on the first page of the car’s display, minimizing the time a driver spends scrolling through icons.
Enabling Sideloaded and Hidden Apps
For power users, some apps may not show up in the launcher because they were sideloaded rather than installed through the Google Play Store. Google restricts these for safety reasons, but they can be enabled through a hidden developer menu. To access this, scroll to the bottom of the Android Auto settings on your phone and tap the “Version” information 10 times. Once developer mode is active, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner, select “Developer settings,” and check the box for “Unknown sources.”
This setting allows the launcher to recognize and display third-party apps that haven’t been officially whitelisted. However, users should exercise caution, as apps not designed for driving interfaces may lack the simplified controls necessary for safe operation behind the wheel.
