Anthropic has expanded the capabilities of its Google Workspace connector, allowing Claude to move beyond drafting and directly send, reply to, and forward emails within Gmail. This update, rolled out in late August 2026, transforms the AI from a writing assistant into an active inbox manager for users on paid tiers.
While Claude previously could only generate text for users to manually copy into an email, the updated integration allows the AI to execute the “Send” command itself. This functionality is restricted to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
How to Enable Email Sending in Claude
To grant Claude permission to interact with Gmail, users must manually enable the Google Workspace connector within their account settings.
1. Navigate to Claude.ai and click on your profile icon.
2. Select Customize from the menu.
3. Locate the Connectors tab.
4. Toggle on the Google Workspace option and follow the authentication prompts to link your Gmail account.
Once connected, Claude does not act autonomously or monitor your inbox in the background. It only interacts with your email when explicitly prompted during a conversation. For example, you can ask Claude to “Find the latest email from the project manager and draft a reply confirming the deadline,” or “Forward my flight itinerary to my assistant with a note about the car pickup.”
Security and Approval Controls
By default, Claude is configured with a “human-in-the-loop” safety mechanism. Even after the AI has written an email and prepared it for delivery, it will present a preview and require the user to click an approval button before the message is actually sent.
For organizations using Team or Enterprise plans, administrators have additional oversight. Admins can access the console to toggle whether members are permitted to send emails without individual manual approval for every message. This allows for a more fluid workflow in professional environments where high-volume automation is required, though individual users can still choose to review drafts before they go out.
Managing Google Drive and Known Limitations
The update to the Google Workspace connector also extends to Google Drive management. Beyond just reading documents, Claude can now move, share, or trash files based on your instructions. If you ask Claude to organize a folder or share a specific report with a colleague, it can execute those file-system actions directly.
However, there are technical boundaries to what the AI can process through this connection:
- Email Attachments: Claude cannot currently read the content of files attached to an email; it can only see metadata such as the filename and file type.
- Image Processing: While Claude can analyze images uploaded directly to its chat interface, it cannot yet process or “see” images stored within Google Drive files accessed via the connector.
- Account Limits: The integration is currently limited to the authorized Google Workspace account associated with the Claude login.
This expansion marks a shift in how Claude interacts with professional data, moving from a siloed chat interface toward a functional tool that can manage tasks across the Google ecosystem.
