Microsoft has officially opened pre-orders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation designed to bring massive local AI compute power to a developer’s desk. Announced alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra, the Dev Box represents a shift toward specialized local hardware for engineers working on large-scale language models and generative AI.
According to the Windows Blog, shipping for the new device is scheduled to begin in November 2026.

NVIDIA Blackwell Architecture on the Desktop
The core of the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is the NVIDIA RTX Spark N1X superchip. This architecture combines a 20-core NVIDIA Grace CPU with a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU. This hardware configuration is designed to deliver up to 1 petaflop of local AI performance, a threshold that allows developers to run and fine-tune models with over 120 billion parameters without relying on cloud-based clusters.
To manage the thermal output of such high-density components, Microsoft utilized a distinct chassis design. This ventilation system is required to maintain the Blackwell GPU’s performance under sustained AI training workloads, which typically generate significantly more heat than standard developer tasks.
While the device is at the top of the Surface lineup, the device targets the same professional market as high-end Mac Studio configurations, specifically focusing on users who require the NVIDIA CUDA ecosystem for AI research and development within a Windows-native environment.
