Jensen Ackles Attributes Countdown Cancellation to Amazon MGM Leadership Changes

Jensen Ackles has offered new context regarding the cancellation of his Prime Video thriller series Countdown, attributing the move to internal corporate shifts rather than a lack of audience interest. Speaking recently during an appearance at the Supernatural convention in Vancouver, Ackles shared his perspective on the show’s conclusion, describing the production as “collateral damage” resulting from a high-level executive transition within Amazon MGM Studios.

Ackles suggested that the series was impacted by a change in leadership where Peter Friedlander, a former Netflix executive, took over as Head of Global TV from Vernon Sanders. According to Ackles, such transitions often lead to new leadership prioritizing their own slate of projects over those established by their predecessors. He challenged the idea that the series failed to find an audience, claiming that Countdown ranked in the Top 3 on Prime Video for 10 consecutive weeks during its run.

This account provides a different angle than previous industry reporting on the show’s demise. Internal reports regarding the cancellation have traditionally cited “total global viewership” as the primary reason the series did not move forward, suggesting it failed to meet the specific international benchmarks required by the streaming platform. Furthermore, the thriller faced challenges with critical reception, maintaining a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the series will not return, showrunner Derek Haas eventually provided some closure for fans who were left with a massive cliffhanger. Haas confirmed via social media that the character Amber Oliveras, portrayed by Jessica Camacho, did indeed survive the events of the first season finale.

Ackles is now shifting his focus toward his ongoing partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and the expansion of The Boys franchise. He is set to star in the prequel series Vought Rising, which is currently in development for a scheduled 2027 premiere. Ackles will reprise his role as Soldier Boy alongside Aya Cash’s Stormfront. Unlike a limited series engagement, Vought Rising is being planned as a multi-season project that will explore the early origins of the Vought corporation in the 1950s.
